Manor of Groves Wedding Video | Bonita & Keith

The day had finally arrived for Bonita and Keith’s Wedding, the sun was out and the air was warming up. It was lovely to film Bonita with her daughters getting ready for the big day. Laughter filled the house as more family arrived and everybody was getting excited and looking glamorous. A great job by Andrea Louca Make Up. Keith appeared quite relaxed and chilled out in comparison with his best man and ushers.

Amazing Venues

Keith arrived at the St. Mary’s church looking very smart, and as always chatting away to everyone who was arriving. When Bonita arrived and stood in the doorway to the church with the sun behind her, she looked absolutely stunning!

The ceremony was beautiful and the choir really took the atmosphere to another level.

We headed to the Manor Of Groves hotel for the reception which was just beautiful, and the fairy lights made it look even more magical. it was a pleasure to film Bonita & Keith in the beautiful green grounds. The camera certainly loves Bonita!!! And Keith was doing his best to keep up 🙂

Emotional

During the day we had the pleasure of working with photographer JP of John Paul O’Donnell Photography. He was very friendly, very easy to work with, and had a great relationship with Keith and Bonita. Then, just when you thought a wedding couldn’t get anymore emotional, it was time for the speeches! We couldn’t help but shed a tear behind the camera. You could feel what was in Keith’s heart when he was speaking. The emotions didn’t stop there either, it was such an amazing thing to see when Bonita dance with her Dad who then handed her over to Keith for their first dance together as Mr and Mrs.

Overall it was such an organised, beautiful and enjoyable wedding to film with such amazing people.

God Bless your life together Bonita and Keith, and thank you that we got to share your special day with you.

Here’s a few stills from the film reel to keep you going until the highlight trailer is revealed…

What a magical venue this was. Café Royal in Regent Street, London.

As soon as we walked through the entrance we were surrounded by gorgeous decor, artwork and sculpture.

This was to be our first wedding filming where all of the celebrations would take place inside. This was apart from the amazing terrace, which was more like a connecting bridge from one side to another and had amazing views over London.

The ceremony and reception took place in the Pompadour room which had a glorious golden design and great depth allowing for a long walk up the aisle.

The speeches certainly kept us on our toes as a number of impromptu speeches arose after the planned ones. We didn’t know where the next one would emerge from as the open mic was passed about. All good fun.

It was to be a stylistic wedding film which captured the magic of the venue and characters of Karen & Ali and friends.

Here is the highlight trailer for the Cafe Royal wedding video of Karen & Ali. We hope you enjoy it.

Blake Hall Wedding Video | Sophie + Jamie

We were at Blake Hall wedding venue in Ongar, Essex at the weekend filming the marriage and celebration of Sophie & Jamie!

This was a beautiful venue with glorious gardens, and with grade II listed barns which accommodate ceremonies and receptions. What a glorious hot day it was and the sun was out in full blast. I was probably one of the hottest days where we’ve filmed a wedding. As we all desperately tried to occupy the shady areas, and tried to keep hydrated, we captured some gorgeous footage of this celebration. The barns at Blake Hall had real character with impressive beams, and quirky exterior. We captured the ceremony in Hay Barn before moving onto the Essex Barn across the grounds for the wedding breakfast. We managed to get some lovely footage of Sophie & Jamie on their romantic shoot.

Working alongside us at Blake Hall wedding venue was Dean Robson from deanrobsonphotography.co.uk who was relaxed and easy to work with. We would highly recommend him, and this made the day even more pleasurable.

We found the whole family so accommodating and friendly, a big thank you to Sophie’s parents Vanessa and Paul (Harry). Perhaps what stood for us was the amazing beautiful bride Sophie. Her journey is nothing short of incredible, and it was clear to see the heart of the man she was marrying, and that his heart was full of love for her. Watching some of the footage back genuinely brought a tear to our eyes. It was a privilege to film.

So, we’re busy putting together the highlight trailer for this one. In the meantime we have taken a few snapshot stills from the film reel of the Blake Hall Wedding Video as a sneak preview.

God bless your future Sophie & Jamie.

Best Wedding Videography Lenses

Home » Weddings

To begin with, every wedding videographer has their own favourite go to lens for different reasons. I know all weddings can be different, and one lens may be better at one wedding than the other. However, there are three to four camera lenses I would have which I am certain would get me through any wedding. I’m not going to name brands in this article as this about the type of lens. So, this is my opinion what I think are the best wedding videography lenses.

The Workhorse

For us it makes total sense to carry a zoom lens. We have a 24-70mm zoom lens each. These are fixed aperture lenses at F2.8. These lenses don’t have huge zoom capabilities, but it’s just enough to give you a bit of play. The fixed aperture is a must! Nice and wide for plenty of bokeh, and it won’t alter when you zoom. I don’t see the point in carrying too many fixed prime lenses when the day is tiring enough without the extra weight. If you’re shooting full frame, then these lenses have enough width to get some wide cutaway shots and big group shots. They are also wide enough for use on a ‘steadycam’.

The extra zoom gives us the scope to focus in if something looks good in front of us, and we might be a bit far off. I really don’t see the point of having to move in to position, then move back out to try and get what you want in the frame? There’s enough moving about and run and gun going on without being limited to fixed lenses. The thing about weddings is that there’s a lot of unpredictability. A wedding will have some elements set, but it’s capturing the moments that just appear.

The Big Lens

The next lens in out kit is a 70-200mm F2.8. Fixed aperture again. These lenses are just amazing. They really aren’t too big, and this lens will be used for many parts of the day; The ceremony for starters. As a wedding videographer you don’t want to position yourself too close to be intrusive so everyone can see you. What’s more, you don’t want to get in the shot of your second camera operator either. This lens gives you the scope to focus on the couple. It also has the ability to get in close for those special moments such as the rings, and the kiss.

If you position a videographer at the back then the 70-200mm has the reach to focus on the couple. Usually if I am at the front with this lens I will also have a second camera that can stay fixed a little wider. I would probably use my 24-70mm again, and why not. With every ceremony venue being different in size, these lenses make sense to give you the flexibility you need. This way there is no added pressure with how many lenses to carry about. When thinking of the next thing you’ll need to shoot, you’ll be thinking ahead to what lens to change.

So far both the 70-200mm F2.8, and the 24-70mm (or 28-75mm) F2.8 are in our kit for most of the day.

As The Light Fades

The duration of each wedding can differ depending on start time, and the elements in between. Sometimes by the time we get to the speeches we would like a bit more light. As well, some venues are just naturally dark, or small. Some don’t have any windows so there’s no natural light. We are actually considering investing in some simple, subtle LED lights. We don’t want to flood everyone and spoil any mood, but if we can have one or two offset just to give some definition then this could be worthwhile.

During the speeches we may turn to 85mm F1.4. This is to open up the aperture as much as we can to allow more light in. Mostly I am fixed on the top table with two cameras, and the occasional ‘reactions’ shot. This element of a wedding day doesn’t require me to move about, so I can afford to find a position where my fixed lens is happy. A lot depends on what space there is and where we’ve manage to perch ourselves. Often there isn’t the luxury of the perfect position. So again I would favour the 70-200mm F2.8, should the distance and light allow. If it’s a bit close then a 50mm F1.8 can be useful.

The second camera operator is focused on people reactions as well as occasionally on top table from another perspective. Occasionally this camera perspective may move. As this camera perspective requires a bit more flexibility to hunt for the reactions, the 70-200mm F2.8 is again ideal.

Ultimately when it comes to light it will depend on your camera set up. If your camera is good in low light then this gives you more scope with the lens you can use.

The Finale

With the light gone the artificial illuminations become your friend, and the camera loves colourful lights. The lens of choice now is the 85mm F1.4 and 50mm F1.8, with the 70-200mm lenses most likely put to bed.  We find that these are great for getting people shots and dancing. Of course, with the aperture wide open at F1.4, focusing on lots of movement is the challenge. There are some great auto-focus capabilities now, but depending on what you have your camera may be hunting. So, manual focusing may take over at this point. If necessary we may also use a 35mm F1.4 which can be used if anything wider is needed.

So there you have it, my opinion on the best wedding videography lenses to use. I’m not saying I wouldn’t use any other lens, but with this list I am sure most weddings will work out OK.

The Cost Of Videography

Home » Weddings

With the rising popularity of professional wedding videography in Essex there are many companies out there offering a variety of services for your wedding. But, there are also a variety of costs for different wedding videographers.

This comes as no surprise as with this there is also a variety in quality of the wedding video that you will get at the end. Wedding videography can range from as little as £395 to around £5000. This is a wide gap. However, similarly wedding photography will be varied in the same way. There is an element of truth in ‘you pay for what you get’.

The Differences in what you get

What is noticeable first is the look of the wedding video. The lower end videos will adopt a home video look, and the shots  and angles may be less impressive. Most of all, the editing can let the film down by being either predictable with poor transitions, or just badly put together which ends up as just a montage of clips to background music. The higher end wedding videographers will adopt a film look, the filming techniques will be more advanced and impressive, and editing will be seamless.

Are You Paying For What You Get?

So, if you want a high end wedding videographer why should they come cheap?

What I really can’t understand is those who want a good videographer but don’t want them cheap. I never really hear this of a photographer? Often a videographer is last on the list and only if the budget allows, or if there is a bit of money left over. Many high end photographers are even more expensive than a videographer and have a far less work to produce the finished product.

A wedding videographer will have to use far more hardware filming kit throughout the day to capture the variety of shots and filming techniques. They will need to capture good audio by using a variety of different high quality microphones on different people in different locations. Then when the day is over the videographer has even more work with weeks and weeks of post production editing to produce your finished feature film.

So it pains me when someone would expect a wedding videographer to be cheaper than a photographer. Yes, if you do want this then, as mentioned, there are those that could probably meet your budget….if that’s suitable for you, and you’re content with that kind of finished film. However, don’t expect what you can get at the high end. Try comparing their films and see what you think.

Conclusion then?

When you think about it, a wedding film of your day will preserve those memories spectacularly. A film would also capture the emotion just as it was. During your wedding day you will miss so much and it will pass so quick. Imagine having things appear in your wedding video you had no idea about?

In my opinion a wedding videographer should cost double what a photographer charges solely because of the work load that has to go into it. Though realistically this doesn’t happen. Having said this, wedding videography is only starting to become a more widely known professional product, and many still don’t know what is on offer with film nowadays. When it has taken it’s rightful place at the top end of the wedding planning check list then maybe prices will accurately reflect the service.

Why Wedding Videography

Home » Weddings

What is the need of wedding video production?

Months of planning goes into your wedding day, the day arrives and you love every minute of it. But the day goes so quick and before you know it you find yourself thinking back over what happened during the day. Often you can’t remember much because there was so much going on and you hadn’t time to take it all in!

So how will you preserve these wonderful memories? There is no better way than to have your very own wedding video.

Stories will unfold during your day, some you wouldn’t even have noticed, and it’s important that these are captured. By capturing these in a wedding film it also captures the spirit of your day with it. Just imagine being able to re-live your wedding day over and over by enjoying your own wedding video which takes you on an emotional roller-coaster from tears to laughter?

Photographer or Videographer?

Planning a wedding can be expensive, and often having a wedding videographer is last on the list, if the budget stretches that far. In contrast to this a photographer will traditionally be first on the list to be booked. Having a good quality photographer to capture special moments is important. However, still images won’t bring your day back to life, they won’t capture the emotion as it happens, and they won’t capture what was said or heard. A still image will bring back a memory that we would have to remember ourselves, but now imagine actually seeing and hearing all that again in a true cinematic style film? Is there any comparison?

A good quality photographer can often be a similar cost to a videographer, often even more expensive than a video. A videographer will then have weeks and weeks of editing to create a film for you on top of the day’s videography. As well as the visual, audio would be captured to a high quality standard. After all, there is little point to a visual without decent sound. Have you ever tried watching a film, or TV programme with awful audio? It’s so off putting. When this is all taken into account a wedding videographer is actually quite cost effective with the amount of work that will go into creating your wedding video. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s photography vs videography, as it’s not a competition, and both provide a significant difference. When it comes to capturing actual memories there’s no comparison.

What you get

A modern wedding video should be of high-definition on ultra-wide cinematic widescreen giving the video a dramatic sense of occasion. That’s what your life-changing event merits. Care should be taken in post-production to make it so much more than just a montage of clips with music tacked on; it creates a beautiful and authentic record of the day. A lot of time needs to be spent with the post production. The editing needs to be so spot on that it’s as though the film clips were made for the music. The audio and visual must be integrated using voice-over and music in such a way that they are married together.
There is an old saying in the film industry that “all good films are made in the cutting room.”

What is the conclusion?

Wedding videography has come a long way since the days of a camcorder. Those days are thankfully gone. Now there is really no limit to what can be re-produced on film. Of course, there are still different levels of video production. Wedding videography companies will differ in their shooting style and quality; this will reflect in the price. If you settle for a cheap videographer this will clearly reflect in the finished product. You may well then end up with a home video look which you don’t want. Your wedding video should have a filmic look. Therefore it is important to watch some of the videos the video production company has produced.

Wedding video production is becoming steadily much more apparent and popular now with modern day cinematic techniques. We would encourage you to seriously consider having your own feature film of your wedding day, it’s a once in a lifetime event. A wedding video will be a way of not only remembering your day, but to re-live it over and over. Don’t just settle for still images, but have a cinematic wedding video to bring it all back to life!

How To Choose Your Wedding Videographer

Home » Weddings

What’s The Deal

It’s the most wonderful occasion of your life, and your wedding video should perfectly encapsulate the spirit and magic of your big day. Preserving wonderful memories, it will become a family heirloom watched on anniversaries for years to come. But which wedding videographer do you trust with the creation of this crucial wedding element? With many wedding videographers in Essex area how do you decide which is right for you?

Research may begin online, or by word-of-mouth. A wedding video is a visual record. When conducting research make sure you see examples of the work of your potential wedding videographer. Trapdoor Films, reputable and professional film-makers, display a portfolio online so you can assess the style of their work. This ensures that it is in keeping with the theme and ambience that you are seeking to generate.

Watch Wedding Videos

Watch examples of wedding videos to check the shooting style, and lighting conditions; do they film both inside and outside? Are the transitions between scenes smooth and does the music help the wedding video bear emotional resonance for the viewer? Whilst you will be initially watching to see how it makes you feel, the technical aspects are highly important. These make the difference between watching a video made by a professional film maker to one shot on your Uncle’s smart phone! Many wedding videographers work individually, but with Trapdoor Films you have at least two people capturing the day. In doing so, this ensures that the best angles are captured and no detail missed.

Trapdoor Films’ wedding videos are of high-definition on ultra-wide cinematic widescreen. This gives the films a dramatic sense of occasion that this life-changing event merits. The care taken in post-production makes so much more than just a montage of clips with music tacked on; it creates a beautiful and authentic record of the day. You don’t have to worry about copyright on the background music that you choose for your wedding video; Trapdoor Films have all the licences that you would require for this.

It’s About Communication

Entrusting such an important aspect of your wedding to a video production company is a big deal. Make sure that you have a connection with your cinematographer and that they are as passionate and dedicated to interpreting your vision and making an amazing film as you are. Your wedding videographer should keep dialogue open from the first enquiry, take on board your requirements, but also demonstrate their expertise by making suggestions and offering ideas. Whilst a rapport is needed, on the day they should be as unobtrusive as possible so as to not distract guests from you!

Planning a wedding can be expensive – achieving value for money will help you from going over budget. Trapdoor Films have packages to meet your requirements. For example, you may not want footage of you getting ready, but see the first dance as an important symbol of your union. You can select the package to suit. They also travel globally to capture weddings, so whether you are getting married in Essex where they are based, London or further afield, even abroad, you are guaranteed wedding videography of the highest quality from calibre film producers at value for money.
